About HRM Parent

What is HRM Parent?

HRM Parent is a an online community for families living, working or playing in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). We connect parents in and around the HRM to local events, information, services, products - and to each other. Family time is too precious to spend it searching for appropriate activities and resources – so we've done it for our local HRM parents!

But HRM Parent is much more than just a directory or an event calendar. We've created a vibrant online local parenting community where parents just like you can pop in whenever they can grab a free minute to connect with other parents, set up playdates, find others with similar interests, and contribute their ideas and thoughts to their online community. We aim to help create and strengthen 'real world' friendships and connections between parents, not replace them. We're a local site, which means that most of the parents on the site won't be far away from you, maximizing the possibility for friendships and support networks.

HRM Parent is run by local parents, for local parents.

How did HRM Parent start?

HRM Parent came about from a conversation between moms discussing how hard it can be to find out what's going on for kids and how often the topic of conversation between moms is just that - figuring out what new and exciting things are out there to do with kids. We were also discouraged about how there are so many great products, services and small businesses in Halifax and Nova Scotia, but that we had to hunt them down. There didn't seem to be any affordable place for them to advertise to speak to us directly, and we wanted to know about them.

HRM Parent started life as Peninsula Parent in January 2007, a neighbourhood print and online newsletter aimed at parents with kids under 6 who live, work or play in central Halifax. Soon parents from other neighbourhoods started writing in asking for Peninsula Parent in their areas! And so, HRM Parent was born. HRM Parent was founded by Charmaine and Richard Dymond, and is now owned and managed by Sarah & Sean Williams and Meghan Collins.
